The hydroponic system offered here is as simple as it gets, growing food without the need for ongoing watering, weeding, electricity, pumps, or complex piping. It is just based upon an ingenious use of buckets and net pots, which capitalise on the amazing adaptability of mother nature!

1 x 20 litre bucket (top diameter 33cm, hight 35cm) represents approximately 4 square feet of growing space and according to the square foot gardening method, under optimum growing conditions, 48 square feet is sufficient to provide fresh vegetables and salad greens for a person, for about three-quarters of the year*.

This hydroponic system is based upon the Kratky method, developed by Prof. Kratky of the University of Hawaii. It was designed to make hydroponics as simple as humanly possible, using no pumps, aeration or electricity – just a bucket of nutrient solution with the plants supported in net pots. Nature does the rest! What Prof. Kratky discovered was that when plants are exposed to nutrient solution, their roots specialise. Those roots which are dipped into the solution directly, become specialised water roots, whilst those suspended in the air become specialised air roots. In soil, they would normally be mixed together.

Deep water culture hydroponics operates on a similar basis, but it requires pumps and aeration, making it many times more expensive and complicated, without generating any greater yields.

Why choose hydroponics over soil?

Many people don’t realise it, but soil is basically a gigantic sponge containing nutrient solution (from the breakdown of organic matter and rocks), so hydroponic growing is much more natural than people think. We just cut out the negative aspects of soil. As well as nutrients, soil also contains plant diseases, pests, moulds and fungi and is far from portable. Equally, soil can vary dramatically in pH, which affects what can grow in it. In hydroponics, all of these factors can be controlled for optimum results. This is why NASA uses it to help feed astronauts!

This system has many advantages:

• Delicious produce is just pennies per portion and can save you a fortune compared with supermarket prices.

If what you are trying to grow is green and leafy, then partial shade yields best results, but if it is the fruit you are trying to grow then as much sun as possible is recommended.

Most things will grow to full maturity within 2 months, with larger fruiting species taking up to 80 days or so.

Different produce requires a different amount of square feet to grow in, so the lids can be drilled with different numbers of net cups. For example, you can have up to seven net pots of peas in one bucket, whereas you would only have a maximum two large tomato plants (or 4 small dwarf varieties). Most of my own hydroponic vegetable garden is based upon having four net cups per bucket (so this is what we provide as standard). This way I can plant companion plants together, for example two tomato plants and two lettuces. They all grow at the same rate initially, but by the time the tomatoes are tall and shading out the lettuces, the lettuces are already ready to harvest.

For many green leafy vegetables such as kale or lettuce you can either harvest the entire plant, or better yet, do as I do and just take some leaves from each plant when you want a salad or some greens. Two buckets can grow eight lettuces in just over a month, or you can harvest a lettuce-worth of leaves per week on an ongoing basis.

Why would you buy irradiated, pesticide-laden and gas-packaged produce from a supermarket (which has travelled hundreds if not thousands of miles) when you can simply snip fresh food from your hydroponic system on your doorstep.

Better yet, get your kids involved and eating healthily. There is no better way to encourage children to eat their veg than when they have grown it themselves from seed in just a matter of weeks!

*DISCLAIMER: Different parts of the country have different micro-climates and levels of sun-exposure so results may vary. Equally, your choice of nutrient solution may dramatically impact upon your results. I can only go by my own results and the feedback from satisfied customers.  Yields quoted are based upon when your plants have matured and can be harvested in stages throughout the growing season – and came from the multi-million selling book “Square foot gardening”.

These hydroponic systems are put together by hand, including the drilling of the lids and the overflow holes. So please anticipate possible minor cosmetic imperfections, which will not be visible when your produce is growing. We have never received any complaints, but in the interests of transparency, I felt it important to mention.

This system is designed for use outdoors or in a greenhouse. The problem with operating it within your home or conservatory is the possibility of odour. Deep water culture systems use a fish tank air-pump to aerate the water and this prevents certain types of bacteria, which cause odour to develop. I am not saying this system cannot be used indoors, but bear this in mind. All of my own systems are operated outdoors so I do not have experience of indoor use to draw upon.  My outdoor buckets have no detectable odour, but I have read that with indoor systems, this could be a possibility.

Kale – An Anti-Cancer Food

Kale - A Great Anti-Cancer Food

Kale is high in folate, which is vital in preventing blood vessel and DNA damage. It is a member of the cabbage family, so it also includes a number of the anti-cancer properties of broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage and brussels sprouts.

In addition to the folate, it is a good source of vitamin A, vitamin C, potassium, calcium, iron and a range of phytochemicals including lutein which promotes eyesight and has been shown to be beneficial in cancer studies.

According to the American Cancer Society, the carotenoids in Kale, have been shown to lower the risk of a range of cancers including mouth and pharynx cancers, oesophageal cancer and lung cancer. Other studies show similar properties with respect to bladder cancer.

Power combination: Be sure to eat kale alongside foods rich in vitamin C, as this helps the absorption of the iron. Equally, adding oil, such as cold-pressed olive oil will help the absorption of the carotenoids.

Ginger Root For The Prevention Of Cancer

Ginger has long been known to possess a number of therapeutic properties. It is being used in remedies for coughs, colds, sore throats, bronchitis, and even to reduce nausea. However, a recent study published in Cancer Prevention Research, a journal of the American Association for Cancer Research, indicated that it also could be used as a supplement to prevent colon/bowel cancer.

Participants in the study were noted as having significantly reduced markers of colon inflammation. Such inflammation has been shown in prior studies to be a significant precursor to colorectal cancer. The levels of Ginger Root used in the study were 2g of ginger extract, which is the equivalent to eating 20g of raw ginger.

Other US studies have also shown ginger to have powerful anti-inflammatory properties which can help to relieve the discomfort from arthritis, and more importantly where cancer is concerned, gingerols, an active ingredient within ginger, have been shown to kill cancer cells.

Interestingly, a US study indicated that ginger was just as effective in the treatment of arthritis as the standard and currently available anti-inflammatory drugs, but did not display any of the dangerous side effects.

In a study conducted by the University of Michigan, ginger was found to be excellent at killing cancer cells. When researchers dissolved ginger powder into a solution containing ovarian cancer cultures, the mutated cells died.

It was found that the ginger destroyed the ovarian cancer cells in two different ways. Firstly, the ginger triggered programmed cell death, (apoptosis), and secondly, the ginger triggered autophagy, which is where the cancer cells digest themselves. The researchers discovered that ginger caused the exact same rate of apoptosis that chemotherapy drugs achieve, yet ginger does not cause any side-effects.

The researchers also highlighted the fact that Ginger Root helps to control inflammation, which can be a precursor to ovarian cancer.

If you are choosing a source of carbohydrate to go with your meals, brown rice is an excellent choice over wheat-based products, such as pasta. Another great choice is sweet potato.

Brown Rice uses the whole grain, which contains numerous benefits related to heart health. In addition to the vitamin E, potassium, iron, phosphorus, thiamine, riboflavin and niacin, brown rice contains a range of lignans, phenolic compounds and phytoestrogens.

Just like flaxseed, brown rice contains lignans, including enterolactone, which helps your body establish the right kinds of healthy bacteria in your intestines, (which are credited with defending against a range of hormone-dependent cancers, including breast cancer).

A Danish study of postmenopausal women discovered that those women consuming the largest quantities of whole grains, including brown rice, were found to have significantly higher levels of enterolactone.

Previous studies have shown that women with a high level of enterolactone (which is associated with a high lignan intake from foods such as brown rice, flax and rye), experienced a decrease in their breast cancer risk by 58%.

Organic Health Foods

Organic health foods are far better for you, in that they won’t have been contaminated with pesticides and herbicides, won’t contain harmful additives and will invariably taste better too!

The full extent of the toxicity of herbicides and pesticides in food is not fully understood.  From animal studies, we know that certain pesticides can cause genetic damage, fertility issues, allergy responses and cancer, so we do not want to come into contact with them, particularly within our food!

Many studies have indicated that even small doses of pesticides can have a detrimental effect on your health.  Unfortunately, we live in a world where the use of pesticides and herbicides is commonplace.

Of course, your primary strategy should be to avoid pesticides in the first place.  Buying organic fruit or vegetables will significantly help with this.

However, this is not always possible, nor financially practical, so the next step is to understand which fruit and vegetables are more likely to be contaminated, and how you can limit your exposure.

Based upon data from over 42,000 tests for pesticides, conducted by the US Department of Agriculture and the Food and Drug Administration (between 2000 and 2005), the following fruit and vegetables were found to contain the most pesticide residues:

  • Peaches
  • Apples
  • Sweet bell peppers
  • Celery
  • Nectarines
  • Strawberries
  • Cherries
  • Pears
  • Grapes (imported)
  • Spinach
  • Lettuce
  • Potatoes

The foods that contained the least pesticide residues were:

This list is not provided so that you can entirely avoid certain vegetables or fruit, but so that you can take extra care in their preparation, or to prioritise which ones you buy organic.

If you cannot buy organic, be sure to wash all produce thoroughly, before using it.  This will reduce levels of some pesticides, but it may not eliminate them entirely.

Peeling certain fruit and vegetables will make a big difference, but the downside is that key nutrients may be lost.

Any vegetable or fruit with a tough skin, such as apples, carrots, celery, etc, can be scrubbed with a brush under running water, which helps to remove much more of the residue.

Certain waxy-skinned items, such as apples or cucumbers can be peeled, because the waxy coating tends to retain more pesticides than other produce.

Any vegetables that grow with overlapping concentric outer leaves, such as lettuce, cabbage, leeks and onions, should have the outer layers peeled away and removed.  Just wash the inner layers.

Hyperthermia and Cancer

It has been documented in numerous studies, that not only is cancer vulnerable to an alkaline pH and high levels of oxygen, but cancer cells are also more vulnerable to heat than healthy cells.

If you heat up tissue enough to kill the cancer cells, but not enough to damage the healthy tissue, you have a targeted therapy.

The reason heat kills cancer cells and not healthy cells is that cancer cells derive their energy from a fermentation process which occurs in cells at lower levels of oxygen.  When heat is applied to a cancer cell, it speeds up the rate at which it ferments to produce energy.  This generates acidic waste products at a rate which is too fast for the cell to remove them, so it is killed by its own metabolic products.  This is called acidosis.

The heat also stimulates tumour cells to release specific proteins onto their outer membranes, which enable our immune system to recognise them as cancer cells – thereby triggering our natural immune response against them.

Local hyperthermia can heat up a localised tumour, but if the cancer has spread, (or is harder to isolate), whole-body hyperthermia can create an artificial fever to cause a generalised response.

Local hyperthermia, brought about by a radio emitter fed into a catheter for 3 hours, has proven to be very effective at treating prostate cancer at centres in Germany, (such as the Klinik St. Georg in Bad Aibling, South Germany), with literally thousands of patients symptom-free years later.

In some centres, they can also combine this with added intravenous vitamin C, selenium, and zinc to help stimulate a greater immune response.

According tо thе Alliance fоr Natural Health, thе state оf California’s Almond Board, іn conjunction wіth thе U.S. Department оf Agriculture, proposed аn industry-wide “mandatory sterilization” rule іn 2007 requiring аll almonds, еvеn thоѕе grown organically, tо bе pasteurized, іn response tо a string оf salmonella outbreaks іn 2001 аnd 2004 (as compared tо, say, a rash оf deaths caused bу prescription drugs еасh year). 33 people bесаmе іll, but thеrе wеrе nо deaths.

Thе Almond Board says fіvе methods оf “pasteurization” аrе allowed. Thеу include: oil roasting, dry roasting, blanching, steam processing аnd, incredibly, thе uѕе оf propylene oxide (PPO), whісh іѕ, according tо thе Environmental Protection Agency, a “probable human carcinogen.”

A sixth method involved irradiating thе almonds, whісh wаѕ actually used fоr mаnу years, thе ANH said, but nоw thе Almond Board says almond pasteurization nо longer includes irradiation.

Thе ANH says thе fіrѕt thrее methods certainly cook thе nuts, meaning thеу аrе nо longer raw; оf thе lаѕt twо methods, steam “causes a marked reduction іn nutrient content аnd partially cooks thе nuts.” Thеn, оf course, thеrе іѕ thе PPO method, whісh uses аn extremely volatile liquid thаt іѕ аlѕо used іn thе making оf polyurethane plastics. Yum.

A host оf medical problems associated wіth PPO

In fact, PPO wаѕ оnсе utilized аѕ a racing fuel, but wаѕ actually banned bу thе National Hot Rod аnd American Motorcycle Racing associations fоr bеіng tоо dangerous. It іѕ ѕо dangerous it’s actually used іn fuel-air bombs.

According tо a material data safety sheet оn PPO, thеrе іѕ thіѕ warning:

Causes gastrointestinal irritation wіth nausea, vomiting аnd diarrhea. Mау саuѕе central nervous ѕуѕtеm depression, characterized bу excitement, followed bу headache, dizziness, drowsiness, аnd nausea. Advanced stages mау саuѕе collapse, unconsciousness, coma аnd possible death duе tо respiratory failure. Aspiration оf material іntо thе lungs mау саuѕе chemical pneumonitis, whісh mау bе fatal…May саuѕе reproductive аnd fetal effects. Laboratory experiments hаvе resulted іn mutagenic effects. Mау саuѕе heritable genetic damage.

Thе Environmental Protection Agency іѕ fully aware оf thе dangers оf PPO аѕ wеll. Thе agency says еvеn short-term exposure tо thе chemical hаѕ caused irritation tо thе eyes аnd respiratory ѕуѕtеm, аѕ wеll аѕ tо thе skin. In addition, thе agency notes thе chemical іѕ a mild central nervous ѕуѕtеm depressant аnd thаt іt causes inflammatory nasal cavity, trachea аnd lung lesions.

In studies оn animals, PPO іѕ known tо саuѕе debilitating neurological effects thаt hаvе led tо tumors, causing thе EPA tо classify іt аѕ a class B2 carcinogen. Thе states оf California, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Minnesota аnd Massachusetts hаvе listed іt оn thеіr state right-to-know registries аѕ a known carcinogen.
